As a life long fine art maker and appreciator, I fell in love with vintage postage stamps – they bring a tiny spark of art (and art history) to the receiver’s day. I wanted to start pairing those little pieces of artwork with beautiful calligraphy, so I took a six week copperplate calligraphy intensive at a local art studio. I inevitably started adding calligraphy to my illustrations, shared some of my practice pieces on social media, and friends began asking for commissioned pieces in my style – from stationery to commemorative artwork. I loved creating heraldry as a hobby so very much, that I decided to formalize it into a business. In 2016, Alison Hight joined me in a general partnership, helping ramp up our strategic vision into scalable operations and driving web dev, while re-branding from Lydia Slotten to Paper Phoenix Designs. Bringing unique set of experience and expertise in art history acumen (and eye for design), organization, and talented web dev skills, we couldn’t have founded without her. Since then, Alison moved to Austin, joining WP Engine where she could put her customer focus meets web dev skills to great use. In early 2018, I re-organized Paper Phoenix as an LLC (Limited Liability Company). We fondly go by Paper Phoenix Co for short.
